In line with legislation, behaviour support plans are required for residents with behavioural concerns. A behaviour support plan is an important part of a resident’s story, to explain relevant behaviours and the reasons why any restrictive practice considered necessary was introduced, as well as how it is being managed, reviewed and its use minimised.
This module discusses the underlying purpose of a behaviour support plan as well as the information required to be included in the plan.

  • Where a chemical restraint is prescribed, the relevant supporting documentation that is required is also detailed together with the requirement for informed consent.
  • The importance of monitoring residents for efficacy of prescribed psychotropics, and documenting the monitoring for potential side effects, is highlighted.
  • For residents under the NDIS, the differing requirements for behaviour support planning is also considered.
