This module recalls the different insulin formulations available, how they differ in their onset of action and duration of efficacy, while highlighting high strength insulin and the need for alerts to reduce a high risk medication incident. Understanding the insulin administration procedure is discussed and the role of a witnessing staff member. Other aspects covered include supply, storage as well as management of hypoglycaemia, risks of withholding insulin and use of sliding scale regimen in residential care.
